Government guidelines on healthy eating were called into question last night after new research cast doubt on claims that salt increases the risk of heart disease. Consumers have been told for years that salt can cause strokes and heart attacks. But a review of medical evidence, led by Dr Joel Dunning, consultant in cardiothoracic surgery at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, has found there is no conclusive proof of a link.
